About the Programme/Event
Meet Theresa, author of the book, “Little Drops: Cherished Children of Singapore’s Past” , as she talks about the moving stories of fifteen adoptees, who were adopted in the 1930s to 1970s in Singapore. Despite being separated from their biological families; these stories retell the profound sense of belonging these adoptees find in their adoptive homes. Based on historical fact, the stories are a documentation of the complexities of cultural identity, the magnanimity of couples who chose to embrace these abandoned children, and how informal social networks played a crucial role in bringing people together in trying times. A distinct feature of these stories is that these adoptees not only come from cultural backgrounds different from those of their adoptive families, but as children they were transferred rather than adopted legally because of the unique circumstances of the times they were growing up in. This book highlights the rich inter-ethnic interactions in our country’s past, while preserving a slice of Singapore history and the heartfelt stories within.
