Have you ever wondered what downtown Rockville used to look like? Join Peerless Rockville for this illustrated presentation on how downtown Rockville evolved over the first 50 years of the 20th century, from hotels and stables to stores, banks, and gas stations. Many community landmarks, churches, and homes, including sections of downtown Rockville’s longstanding African-American neighborhood from this era are no longer present today.
In the 1960s, the majority of Rockville’s central business district was demolished by an Urban Renewal plan known as “The Mid-City Project.” Entire blocks with buildings from throughout Rockville’s history were destroyed, homes and businesses relocated, and even the layout of the streets altered. Come see what existed before the destruction of Urban Renewal.
This presentation is in conjunction with Peerless Rockville’s virtual exhibit “Changing the Map – the Mid-City Project: Urban Renewal in Rockville” about the ambitious federally funded Urban Renewal project that permanently altered the social and commercial heart of the City.
