Set in the 1950s, Eleanor is invited by Dr. Montague to spend a few days in Hill House. The monument has a dark past, and Dr. Montague hopes to be able to experience and prove that psychic phenomena exist (aka hauntings). Other interesting characters inhabit the house, both living and non-living, during Eleanor's stay. Eleanor and the house become increasingly intertwined as she begins to question her past as well as her innermost desires. "Silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone."
