For more than a decade, and nearly 2,000 performances, parents, caregivers, and children from all parts of the globe were a part of the magical experience that is Baba Ras D. and Harambee at BloomBars. Now, more than ever, it is imperative that take the lessons and imprints that Harambee imparts to all participants, especially the little ones who have just come into a world during a global crisis: connection, community, nonviolence, peace education, empathy, cultural competency, early-child brain development, and a circle of love for all humanity.

Pre-pandemic, Harambee @BloomBars was a Washington DC institution and a cultural/moral compass for thousands of parents and youth. In Swahili, Harambe means “All pull together.” At BloomBars, Harambe is the practice of hope, possibility and compassion – basically, all the things that happen when we all come together. Think of it as your little one’s first opportunity to express his or her voice (into a microphone), dance, play a drum or percussion instrument, shout, or sing-along to songs that build character, confidence and community. With more than 10 years of experience in youth development, education and conflict resolution, program instructor Baba Ras D’s “Harambee Experience” is a morning jolt of inspiration for parents, caregivers and children.Recommended for parents, caregivers and kids ages 0 to 7 years. (Note: This is not an event just for kids. Parents and caregivers are equally apart of the experience and are encouraged to pick up an instrument and model joy through positive rhythmic vibrations for their little ones.

Parental consent required.$15 on EventBright, $20 at the door. (No one will be turned away for lack of funds, but could be turned away if we reach capacity). As a Natural Born Servant Leader, Baba Ras D was born at the height of the Civil Rights era in Washington, D.C. and raised in a household that practiced myriad forms of faith-based expression and spiritual enlightenment including A.M.E. Baptist, Evangelical Christian, Catholic and Traditional African Religions. This multicultural religious experience gave birth to a love and inspiration for music and creative self-expression during Baba Ras D’s formative years. Countless spiritual retreats and revivals fostered an appreciation and respect for the Spirit Soul and a reverence for the Ancestors and the Supernatural. HARAMBEE is where children celebrate learning through movement and songs. ‘Young Scholars’, as he refers to the youth, are encouraged to “PASS THE PEACE, SO THE PEACE CAN INCREASE.” HARAMBEE has successfully served hundreds of thousands of Young Scholars over 20 years
