Don’t miss SJZ’s newest program exploring the music of exciting artists and the music that inspires them. This edition of “The Hang,” features longtime Santana timbalero Karl Perazzo and is part of a weekend residency including a guest stint at the free all-ages SJZ Break Room Jazz Jam on Friday, February 6.Come down early to have a drink and hang with friends and SJZ staff while listening to deep cuts from vinyl LPs personally chosen by Karl earlier in the day at one of Downtown San Jose’s prime album spots, Needle to the Groove. Needle drop is 7pm, sharp! At 8pm, Karl performs a set with his band. After the concert, feel free to grab another drink and hang with Karl for a chat about vinyl and his legendary role in the Bay Area Latin music scene from 8:45–9:30. Check out The Hang. It's part sophisticated listening session, part vinyl night, part live jazz performance, part discussion... and all hang.
Eight-time Grammy Award winner Karl Perazzo’s rapid-fire timbale work and fearless confidence have powered Santana's latin grooves since 1991, most notably on the multi-platinum Supernatural. A childhood prodigy who played with Cal Tjader, Malo and Prince by age 12, he's also performed with Mariah Carey, Dizzy Gillespie and Phish.
Born and raised in San Francisco, Perazzo dreamed of playing with Santana from an early age. His life-long aspiration became reality when he joined the band to play timbales, bringing blistering patterns that take the music and audiences to new highs. He recorded Another Day in the Park with Santana percussion partner Raul Rekow, showcasing their powerful chemistry. Beyond performing, Perazzo teaches percussion and starred in LP's instructional video From Afro-Cuban to Rock, breaking down complex Cuban rhythms with an infectious teaching style.
