About the workhop:

Fintech refers to the innovative use of technology in financial services with the aim of delivering financial services more efficiently, conveniently, and cost-effectively. This introductory talk will explore the growing world of Fintech in the UAE and beyond. Fintech encompasses a wide range of applications, including mobile banking, peer-to-peer lending, robo-advisors, blockchain-based cryptocurrencies, crowdfunding platforms, and digital payments, among others. Fintech has enabled the creation of new business models in the financial sector that often challenge traditional financial institutions. An important benefit of fintech is its potential to promote financial inclusion by providing access to financial services for underserved populations. Venture capital and private equity (VCPE) plays an important role in funding fintech start-ups and scale-ups. While global growth of investment in fintech has slowed, sinking to $51.2 billion in 2023, (a 48% reduction from 2022), fintech investment in the UAE has soared by almost 100%. This is in part thanks to more fintech-friendly regulations and greater adoption of digital banking and fintech tools. This highlights the growing importance of fintech in the UAE and underlines the growing role of the UAE in the (fin)tech sector.

This workshop is an introduction to fintech specifically tailored for professionals who are interested (but not experts) in financial services. Beyond providing an engaging and accessible overview of fintech, with special focus on the UAE, it will also outline how fintech, VCPE and related aspects feature in the MSc FM programme.
