THE GRIEVOUS ANGELS:
For the last three decades, Charlie Angus and the Grievous Angels have carved out a unique place in the alt-roots landscape. Their songs, craftsmanship and live performances conjure the tragic beauty of life in Canada’s northern blue collar frontier.
The band has just released their 8th and most powerful album so far. The Summer Before the Storm captures the atmosphere of our times with its deep uncertainties, social dissonance and people struggling to find a way forward. Call it a soundtrack for the COVID era – Summer Before the Storm is a kick ass journey of hope in unsettled times.
The group has come a long way since their early days as a street busking band. They have rleased 8 albums, garnered two Juno nominations, have been featured in multiple movie soundtracks and have played every where from big stage festivals to biker bars and from picket lines to fly-in First Nation communties.
Most of all, the Angels are survivors. Their newest line up has been described as a melding of Woody Guthrie and Crazy Horse. They sing songs of hope, heartbreak and working class defiance.
Btw… lead singer Charlie Angus has a side gig as the NDP MP for Timmins James-Bay.
