Green party leader Zack Polanski calls for a wealth tax, stands up to the far-right’s lies about immigration and defends trans+ rights. The Green Party conference recently saw delegates vote for radical positions, including proscribing the Israel Defence Forces as a terrorist organisation.
At the same time, Your Party has been through damaging divisions that have put off many of the 800,000 people who signed up to support it.
Socialist Worker has argued that the Greens were in fact two parties: an urban one that talks left and a suburban and rural one that appeals to former Tory and Lib Dem voters.
This is still true but it’s easy to make a similar criticism against Your Party. The six Independent Alliance MPs stand for Palestinian liberation. But, apart from Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana, they do not have a broader set of socialist politics.
Shockat Adam says the new party shouldn’t be “anti-wealth” or “alienate landlords” with class politics while Adnan Hussain argues electoral pragmatism in his opposition to trans+ rights. If the MPs remain in charge, Your Party could end up having a policy platform to the right of the Greens.
So why should socialists still supports a new left party over the Greens?
All welcome to join this crucial discussion.
(All our meetings also have a second part discussion about current political events, national and local campaigns, demonstrations, strikes etc)
