Don't Trash It, Smash It!Join the Southern Illinois Pumpkin Smash Event 🎃 : November 9th, 12 PM - 3 PM
Each year, over one billion pounds of pumpkins are grown in the U.S, and after Halloween, millions end up in landfills, contributing to methane emissions. Pumpkins are 90% water, making them great for soil but problematic for landfills.
To combat this waste, SIU Sustainability Office, SIU Student Sustainable Farm, Jackson County Health Department, and Green Earth Inc have partnered to bring you the Southern Illinois Pumpkin Smash!
Event Details:
When: Saturday, November 9th, 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Where: SIU Farms Service Center, 2704 Union Hill Rd, Carbondale, IL 62903
What: Drop off your pumpkins and enjoy some fun, hands-on smashing activities! Don’t miss the Pumpkin Trebuchet and Pumpkin Cooking Demonstration with food samples. All smashed pumpkins will be composted at SIU’s Forced Air Composting Facility, reducing landfill waste.
Last year, we recycled around 2.8 tons of pumpkins, and this year, we’re aiming to break that record!
Additional Fun:
FREE COMPOST: Bring a 5-gallon bucket/container to take home fresh compost!
SIU WATER DAWG on-site: Don’t forget your reusable drink container!
Busy that day? No problem! You can also use our drop-and-go site for easy pumpkin composting.
This family-friendly event encourages outdoor fun, so bring your pumpkins (make sure they’re free of contaminants like candles, stickers, or synthetic decorations) and join us!
