About this Event
The Great Northern Railway (GNR) in Lincolnshire
Presented by David Ingleby
This talk will cover the origins of the company in the mid-1840s and explore how Lincolnshire played a prominent part in its early days with the main line traversing the county for a few years, plus the building of the company's first engineering works in the Lincolnshire. The speaker will consider a selection of the Great Northern Railway lines in the county in more detail and will include pictures of GNR locations in the county, some of which are well-known, and others less so, images of some of the staff who worked for the GNR in Lincolnshire will also be included.
David Ingleby has a lifelong interest in steam railways. He was brought up in Peterborough where his love of steam railways was born, particularly of the southern section of today's ECML built by the GNR. In his own words, he spent many happy hours on the platforms at Peterborough North 'copping' as many engine numbers as he could.
David is currently the Genealogy Officer for the Great Northern Railway Society and past Chairman. He is also a Volunteer Speaker and Tour Guide for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
