Retrace the story of the disaster that befell Boston's North End in the winter of 1919.
About this Event

Join Mike Manning of the Friends of the Boston Harborwalk (FBHW) for a combination virtual tour and walking tour (weather permitting) to commemorate the 107th anniversary of the Great Molasses Flood of 1919. We will meet in the Leventhal Center Room (LCR) at the Boston Harbor Hotel located at 70 Rowes Wharf in Boston's Wharf District. The LCR is located on the ground-level of the hotel - through the large exterior arch. Once through the arch, turn left and the LCR is on your left. The first hour will be held in the LCR room. If the weather cooperates, we'll walk (about 18 minutes) to the GMF site for 30 minutes or so. Please dress appropriately. The Great Molasses Flood of 1919 shattered Boston's North End neighborhood on an unseasonably warm winter afternoon in January, 1919. After a brief overview of other disasters that have befallen Boston over the years, the discussion will focus on how and why the molasses tank came to be installed in one of Boston's most densely populated neighborhoods - and how poor design and construction oversight, along with a lack of maintenance, led to its eventual failure. All participants must register in advance as space is limited and we want to be able to contact you in case of inclement weather. While the tour is free - donations are accepted in order to support our mission. The Friends of the Boston Harborwalk is a volunteer group affiliated with Boston Harbor Now. The group meets monthly to create awareness, promote public enjoyment, and foster local stewardship of Boston’s 43-mile Harborwalk. For more information on FBHW membership, please contact Mike Manning, Chair, at [email protected].
