About this Event

Join the Artists Collective and Connecticut Public Broadcasting for a screening and community conversation of Henry Louis Gates Jr's newest docuseries, The Great Migrations: A People on The Move.

A People on the Move explores the transformative impact of Black migration on American culture and society. From the waves of Black Americans to the North—and back South—over the last century to the growing number of immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean today, the film shows how movement is a defining feature of the Black experience.

The screening will focus on Episode 4, Coming to America, explores the influxes of African and Caribbean immigration during the 20th and at the turn of the 21st century. This episode looks at their journeys to and within this country, as well as how they’ve shaped what it means to be Black in America, in every chapter from their worldviews to the traditions they’ve brought with them, to the culture they’ve helped to create.

This community event is not only an opportunity to view Episode Four, but also to participate in a fireside chat with panelists discussing how Black migration has shaped our communities in the greater Hartford area.
