THE GREAT FOREST WAY
Come and experience the inaugural Great Forest Way, held in the majestic forests of the Central Highlands on the lands of the Wurundjeri, Taungurung and Gunnai Kurnai peoples. The route takes you through the tallest trees in the Southern Hemisphere and some of the finest drinking water on this planet. This is not a race, though there is nothing stopping you from riding it as fast as you want. Instead, its intention is to connect riders with the beauty of these forests and the life that call them home. The Great Forest Way links key towns with the ecological and spiritual beauty of this region, and is aimed at highlighting just how bloody good the bikepacking is. The ride will start at 8:30am from Lilydale station, making it incredibly accessible from Melbourne; for the best experience, we’ll be shortly posting a recommended itinerary that includes campsites to share the stoke together after a wonderful day pedalling.
The route is approx. 285km with 5850m of climbing, but doesn’t require too much in the way of technical skills. 40-45mm tyres would get you around comfortably, but ensuring that you have a forgiving gear range would be the main priority; there are many amazing views en route, but all must be earned. That said, thankfully each climb offers the reward of long and joyful descents on the other side. Stay off the brakes and enjoy some of the finest tree surfing around!
The route spans a variety of ecosystems and terrain; the one constant is big trees and long climbs. You’ll experience everything from towering eucalypts and tree ferns, to pockets of old wet forests, through to drier bush. The world-renowned Acheron Way is one of many highlights along the route, but there are plenty of lesser-known sections that are just as soul filling. Not to mention the ample bakeries along the way, which do a good job of filling your stomach too! All and everyone are welcome.
THE RULES:
As it’s not a race, the usual bikepacking rules don’t apply; we only ask that you respect the lands you’re riding on, stop and smell the eucalypts and leave these forests better than you found them. Remember, happiness is best when shared! Halve a sausage roll with a new friend, or offer some water halfway up the climb. Revel in the scenery as you whip down the other side. Leave no trace, and share stories together in the evening.
RECOMMENDED ITINERARY:
Whilst this is very much a ‘go-your-own-way’ experience, we’ve built a loop that we feel is the best way to both push yourself and still have the best experience possible. Each night will have a campsite, where we can all sit together and swap stories after a magic day soaring through some of the best riding in the country. This will be published in detail very soon!
