The Great Divorce
Based on the novel by C.S. Lewis
Adapted and Performed by Anthony Lawton
Anthony Lawton has adapted C.S. Lewis’ novella into a skillful 80-minute performance.
The Great Divorce is a “journey” through the afterlife by bus. Lawton portrays over a dozen characters as they deliberate over the choice of Heaven or Hell, a decision which is not as simple as it sounds.
The 12 characters Lawton depicts in his solo performance of The Great Divorce are engaged in “this great civil war”, struggling to decide whether or not they will give up human pettiness in order to spend eternity in Heaven or get back on the bus to Hell, not addressing their addictions and grudges. But the choice between joy and miserable loneliness proves to be much harder than they would have guessed. The piece is a feast of rich language, profound psychological insight, and humor. And Lawton’s performance is lively (to the point at which it seems hardly likely there is merely one man on stage).
