(Jim Hosking, 2016, USA, 93 minutes)This 2016 Sundance horror/anticomedy whatsit, produced in part by the state-funded British Film Institute (not to mention Frodo himself, Elijah Wood), follows a deranged father/son duo, the alpha father Big Ronnie (Michael St. Michaels) and the passive and helpless son Big Brayden (Sky Elobar), who run a disco walking tour which targets tourists and is rife with fabrications. When Janet (Elizabeth de Razzo), a woman both fancy, takes the tour, it sets up an intergenerational battle for her attention, all against a backdrop of a serial killer who is terrorizing the town by slathering himself with grease and murdering people in the night. This bad taste epic has a memorable 8-bit-sounding score of hits with titles like “Oily Grapefruit,” “Fizzy Barf,” and “Stoned on Fart Fumes,” and film critic Wendy Ide of The Observer says that The Greasy Strangler is “like an early John Waters movie but without the sophistication.”
