THE GOOD READERS CLUB - ONLINE

Session 4: Thursday 16th May 7 pm-8.30 pm

~ A Book Club for Writers~

Please note this is an online repeat of an event first held in person.

They say that to be a good writer, you must read widely. In this monthly discussion group, we'll be deep-diving into pieces by a variety of writers across different genres, analysing both the writers' craft and our response to it as readers.

In these online sessions, we'll be focused on non-fiction writing:

  • Session 1 (Thursday, 15th February, 7 pm-8.30 pm): Memoir & biography

Extracts: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou; Giving Up the Ghost, Hilary Mantel; Jane Austen: A Life, Claire Tomalin.

  • Session 2 (Thursday, 14th March, 7 pm-8.30 pm): Essays

Extracts: 'Suffering Like Mel Gibson' from Intimations, Zadie Smith; 'Notes from a Native Daughter' from Slouching Towards Bethlehem, Joan Didion; 'The Master's Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master's House' from Sister Outsider, Audre Lorde

  • Session 3 (Thursday, 18th April, 7 pm-8.30 pm): Journalism

Extracts: 'Sexual Misconduct Trails a Hollywood Mogul', New York Times, Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey; She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story that Helped Ignite a Movement, Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey

  • Session 4 (Thursday, 16th May, 7 pm-8.30 pm): Narrative non-fiction

Extract: Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times, Katherine May

Short extracts will be circulated to attendees before each session, so do be prepared to do a small amount of advance reading to get the most out of each session.

These workshops will be hosted by Writers Workshop associate and freelance editor Hannah Boursnell. Hannah worked in publishing for fifteen years, most recently at Little, Brown Book Group. Now freelance, Hannah provides editorial services to various UK publishers and also works directly with writers.
