πβ¨ Books for Thought: Think . Act . Impact β¨π
In celebration of Refugee Week and Windrush Day, we're excited to announce that our next book club meeting will be centered around "The Good Immigrant." This powerful collection of essays explores the experiences of immigrants in the UK, offering deep insights into identity, culture, and belonging.
ποΈ Date: Saturday 29th June
π Time: 10am-11am
π Location: Malpas Road Community Centre & Online
*Women Only*
π "Bringing together 21 exciting black, Asian and minority ethnic voices emerging in Britain today, The Good Immigrant explores why immigrants come to the UK, why they stay and what it means to be βotherβ in a country that doesnβt seem to want you, doesnβt truly accept you β however many generations youβve been here β but still needs you for its diversity monitoring forms.
Inspired by discussion around why society appears to deem people of colour as bad immigrants β job stealers, benefit scroungers, undeserving refugees β until, by winning Olympic races or baking good cakes, or being conscientious doctors, they cross over and become good immigrants, editor Nikesh Shukla has compiled a collection of essays that are poignant, challenging, angry, humorous, heartbreaking, polemic, weary and β most importantly β real."
Our women's only book club is a warm, welcoming, and friendly environment where we discuss, chat, laugh, and explore the theme of the book together.
