About this Event
Join The Glass Class!
Book a 2hr slot on Friday 24th or Saturday 25th January 2025
St Andrews Botanic Garden, The Boiler House
Come along to a group voice recording session, as we build a collaborative voiceover for a new moving image work ‘The Glass Class’. This will form part of our upcoming exhibition with the Travelling Gallery in Spring 2025.
The script we will be working with is constructed as different scenes, taking us through time and space in the history of the botanical garden and considering the figure of ‘the glasshouse’.
No experience necessary, all voices welcome! Scripts will be provided on the day, no need to learn or practise in advance.
Each session has 6 places, and will last for two hours, including full briefing and time for each person to record a section. There will be plenty of breaks and time for rehearsing on the day too.
We especially welcome volunteers and those with a connection to St Andrews Botanic Gardens, as well as anyone with an interest in garden history, ecology, art or film! All voices and genders welcome; suitable for age 16+. Hot drinks and some snacks are provided on the day.
We are excited for your voice to be part of the work!
Consent
Please be aware that as a work in development there is a chance that we won’t be able to use all the material generated in the workshop within the final cut of the film. All workshop participants will be fully credited as part of the film. The sessions will be documented through photography. If you do not wish to be photographed, or have any questions, please speak to the facilitators at the beginning of the session.
Access
A small budget is available to cover travel and access costs, please get in touch if you would like to discuss making use of this. If you have any other access requirements please let us know in advance.

About the artists’ residency
For their project ‘After Glass’, artists in residence Rachel McBrinn and Alison Scott have been conducting on site research at SABG over the course of 2024. A key focus of their research is the recent decommissioning of SABG’s glasshouses, and ideologies and histories these structures represent.
Thanks to Creative Scotland Open Fund for supporting the project.
Alison Scott often makes work in collaboration with other artists and groups of people. Her work as an artist, writer and art-worker is research-led, driven by film, performance and writing practices. Her works tend to look at socio-ecological issues, and she has recently started a practice-based PhD at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, focussing on art, forestry and the commons.
Rachel McBrinn is an artist and filmmaker based in Edinburgh. Her filmmaking practice is rooted in conversation and relationship building, and often emerges from long term site-responsive and archival research.
