This August, Arkadin is excited to present TEENAGE DREAM: OBAYASHI IN THE ’80s, a collection of restored films by Nobuhiko Obayashi, the filmmaker behind legendary horror freakout, House (also playing this month). These restorations are made possible by Cult Epics and the American Genre Film Archive.“[Obayashi] feels like he’s reinventing cinema with every movie he makes.” – Sean Gilman
After his great success with House at Toho, legendary filmmaker Nobuhiko Obayashi was given the notoriety to start dabbling in the mainstream. His adaptation of the electrifyingly popular 1967 Japanese novel The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was the first adaptation of Yasutaka Tsutsi’s book (followed by several others including the popular anime film by Mamoru Hosoda), and was the second highest grossing Japanese film of the year in 1983. After breaking a beaker at school that releases a lavender-like scent causing student Yoshiyama Kazuko to faint, she wakes up the following morning with the ability to travel through time. Sentimental and sweepingly romantic, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a time-travel adventure with a huge beating heart.
“A poignant yet sweet story of the torturous beauty that is growing up, told with all the mastery that you would expect of Obayashi.” – easternKicks
