The Georgia Thunderbolts' journey to becoming Southern rock's new torchbearers wasn't always glamorous. Not long ago, they were busking at gas stations, playing covers poorly, and performing for just a bartender and a three-legged dog in Alabama. Tickets at elktonmusichall.com - Red Smith and friends open the show! Today, this Rome, Georgia-based band is critically acclaimed and touring internationally with their latest album, *Rise Above It All*, released by Mascot Records. The 13-track album showcases their hard-hitting Southern rock, blues, and Americana, reflecting a deep emotional range and diverse musical influences.
Lead vocalist TJ Lyle notes, “When you cut back on being a tough guy, more emotions can come through, and you hear that on this record.” The band, which also includes Zach Everett (bass, classical guitar, harmony vocals), Bristol Perry (drums), Logan Tolbert (guitar), and Riley Couzzourt (guitar), blends late '60s singer-songwriter intimacy with blues, country storytelling, and classic hard rock.
Raised on a mix of '80s rock and classic country, Riley says, “As soon as TJ opens his mouth you know we’re from the South.”
Post-lockdown, they've made up for lost time, performing with rock legends like Black Stone Cherry, Deep Purple, and Blackberry Smoke.
Red Smith writes songs about the "unincorporated country," as he calls it: that land of finding your own best self in this era haunted by addiction, mental illness, and hard times.
