https://www.scottishgeologist.co.uk/store/p/chatelheraultJoin me on Sunday 22nd December where we will take a walk around Chatelherault country park looking at some of the rock formation here from the Carboniferous period that sit underneath Hamilton.
This tour will be our secret Santa Tour therefore I ask if each of you could bring a rock as a gift and give it to someone else on this tour.
This walk is 4km long and has an ascent/descent of 200m and is considered of intermediate fitness level.
The rocks beneath our feet are part of the middle Scottish coal measures formation and the upper Scottish coal measures formation which were both cyclic sediments deposited during the Carboniferous period 330 million.
The middle Scottish coal Measures formation contain cyclic beds of sandstone, siltstone and mudstone that commonly coarsen upwards but also fine upwards locally, with seat-earth and coal at the top - each rock type represents different environments of deposition that we have a wee look at when down by the river on the route.
the Scottish upper coal measures is the same with repeated cycles of the same rocks but instead of coarsening upwards, it fines upwards and is red in colour due to oxidation.
if you’d like to meet us there you can at this locality Outside the oaks cafe at 12:00 - There are toilet facilities onsite for those who need it - https://maps.app.goo.gl/abMHw8N7mwczLehc7?g_st=ic
