The Gathering Place Brings Docudrama to Cleveland to Raise Prostate Cancer Awareness
Black men are more likely to get prostate cancer than other men. They are also more than twice as likely to die from it, get it earlier and have a more advanced form of the disease when it’s found, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Black Walnut, an award-winning film by prostate cancer survivor Terrance Afer-Anderson, explores the alarming African American prostate cancer disparity. The Gathering Place is proud to offer a free screening of the film at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 25th at the Cleveland Foundation in observance of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
The event will also feature a panel discussion following the film, with topics addressing health equity, diversity and inclusion, and the importance of African-American participation in preventative screenings and clinical trials. Panelists include Terrance Afer-Anderson, Writer-Producer-Director, The Black Walnut; Neel Parekh, MD, Cleveland Clinic; Carvell Nguyen, MD, MetroHealth; Randy Vince, MD, University Hospitals and a prostate cancer survivor.
