Seminar Topics and Speakers:

Dr Rob Brown, CSO Eden BREW

Originally from the United Kingdom (UK), Dr Rob Brown has spent the last 20 years working in commercial research in the United States, most recently in the role of Vice President Research at Viridos (formerly Synthetic Genomics Inc.) . Prior to this, Dr Brown gained tenure, Diversa Corp (now BASF), Solexa Ltd. (now Illumina), Dow Chemical and Chirotech Ltd (now Dr Reddys). He received his Ph.D. (1996) Bacterial Pathogenesis from the Centre of Microbial Research and Microbiology, Porton Down in the UK. He has more than twenty issued patents and additional pending applications in various areas of industrial biotechnology.

Harnessing the power of nature to address global challenges

Today, many products we know, use, and consume are produced by biological systems from medicines to nutritional products to chemicals. There are a multitude of institutes and companies around the globe utilizing synthetic biology, AI guided genomics, precision fermentation and data analytics to address issues of titre, productivity, and yield.

The industry has evolved over the last twenty plus year, and we now have extensive expertise in biodiscovery, cutting-edge genomics, data analytics and AI to develop improved or novel hosts with the goal of achieving a step change improvement in production costs and quality. These novel hosts also offer huge opportunities for innovative and sustainable solutions. Every product, solution and innovation starts with data, ideally functional data, we have AI tools to derive potential function from sequence or structure. The biologist must test and iterate these machine learning models to feed training data sets. Sometimes, however, functional screening from diverse populations is the fastest way to find a biological catalyst where a pathway or compartments provides a specific product or intermediate. Here I show several examples where novel production systems have developed by engineering and optimization of both the cell specific productivity as well as the manufacturing process. As an industry we continue to leverage to the power of mother nature to revolutionize paradigms of bio-based production.

Prof. Jolieke van der Pols, PhD SFHEA

Program Lead Food Innovation Queensland University of Technology

Deputy Program Lead Innovative Ingredients, Food and Beverage Accelerator (FaBA)

Prof. Jolieke van der Pols’s main background is in nutrition and health research. During much of her career, she has researched links between what people eat and their risk of developing diseases incl. cancer types, cardiovascular and eye diseases. She has also researched the potential health effects of modifications in food formulations, for example through fortification with specific nutrients, and led clinical trials to assess health benefits of novel food formulations.

With QUT being a leader in research of synthetic biology for production of food ingredients, Jolieke is now applying her health and nutrition expertise to this rapidly developing field that offers important opportunities for the development of novel food products. She sits on the Industry Working Group on Regulation with Cellular Agriculture Australia, and is a Deputy Program Lead Innovative Ingredients with the Food and Beverage Accelerator (FaBA) Trailblazer Program. She also leads the Food Innovation Program at the Centre for Agriculture and the Bioeconomy (QUT). Jolieke obtained a MSc (Human Nutrition) from Wageningen University in The Netherlands, and a PhD (nutritional epidemiology) from the University in Cambridge (UK).

In this seminar, Jolieke will discuss the opportunities and issues to be addressed in relation to maximising benefits to consumers and planetary health from the use of precision fermentation for novel food ingredient production.
