About this Event

The Future of Democracy: Indigenous Perspectives

The New Zealand Centre for Global Studies proudly presents its 12th annual lecture on 21 October at Parliament, kindly hosted by Ingrid Leary, MP.

HE Keith Smith, High Commissioner for Canada, will lead 'The Future of Democracy: Indigenous Perspectives', with a 20 minute address. Conversational in style and moderated by our Board Chair, Hon Nanaia Mahuta, 15 minute responses from HE Ms Manahi Pakarati and Ngaa Rauuira Pumanawawhiti will follow, allowing time for questions from the audience.

As she draws the threads of the conversation together, Nanaia will set a wero for 'Step up to the world|Tū māia ki te ao:The Future of Democracy', a participatory forum for kōrero and action, to be held on 22 October from 8am-5pm at the National Library.

Joining a series of 'Step up to the world|Tū māia ki te ao' forums, this collaborative event, will bring a range of voices and perspectives together, in what we expect to be the first in a series of initiatives on this critical issue. Expert presenters and participants will explore questions and share ideas from the current state of democracy to the influence and impacts of education, technology, economics, and geopolitics, on the future of democracy.

Valuing accessibility and inclusion, we encourage those who can, to make a 'pay forward' donation that allows free access for students and unwaged participants.

Register here for 'Step up to the world|Tū māia ki te ao: The Future of Democracy' 22 Oct
