The Francis Wolves & Tyde
Brisbane’s cinematic funk juggernauts The Francis Wolves team up with the fem-led band known for getting your ass on the dance floor; TYDE for one night only. Bring your dancing shoes 'cause we’re going deep into the ju ju.
THE FRANCIS WOLVES
Hailing from Brisbane, Australia, The Francis Wolves deliver a sound that Triple J’s Dom Alessio refers to as ‘the soundtrack to big wave surfing…in hell’. An instrumental funk juggernaut that brings together a melting pot of genres. It’s a fuzzed out wall-of-sound with ferocious horns and a brooding rhythm section. There’s ominous organ and infectious congas. It’s a hot mess. A funky hot mess.
Their most recent second album, recorded in Brisbane and mastered in Hamburg, Germany by Fabian Tormin (Biffy Clyro, The Kills, Kurt Vile, Lee Ranaldo) delves deeper into more dark and ominous territory than their debut managed. It’s a more mature offering from the Francis Wolves pulling no punches musically.
Among the 10 tracks, they pay homage to one of the greatest composers of all time, Ennio Morricone – who passed away during the recording of the album – in “The Ballad of Lee Van Cleef”. It’s a cinematic underscore for today’s spaghetti western complete with timpani drums, theremin and an unhinged guitar solo.
The shades on this record are deeper and darker. From the brooding, Fender Rhodes driven “199 to Brunswick” to the MC5 influenced “Brother Wayne Kramer” the record tells a story of hardship, grit and determination…and it does so, without any words. So get on board and get yourself to the dancefloor. You won’t regret it. It's The Francis Wolves.
TYDE
Brisbane fem-lead 8-piece TYDE have a truly genre-fluid sound, brandishing an intricate soundscape that ebbs and flows between jazz, prog, pop, funk, and folk. Combining percussive finger-style guitar riffs, funky bass and horn lines, and heavy prog moments for your head-banging pleasure, TYDE will get you both grooving and wondering what time signature you're dancing to.
Their repertoire calls to mind artists like Hiatus Kaiyote, The Cat Empire, Vera Blue, and Franz Ferdinand - their energetic live show seamlessly knits this broad range of sounds together.
TYDE began as a trio in less-than-ideal circumstances just as the pandemic hit in 2020, and despite front-woman Ella being intermittently out-of-action for the better part of 2 years with a major health issue, the band has grown into an 8-piece mean-lean-fusion-machine receiving Triple J radio play, they have played festivals including Bluesfest Byron Bay, Brisbane International Jazz Festival, Airlie Beach Festival Of Music, Yonder (Now Is Nigh), It’s A Secret Festival, and they’ve embarked on multiple East Coast and regional VIC tours. They featured on compilation album 'Get This Double Standard Disbanded' alongside John Butler Trio, The Waifs, and Emily Wurramara to fundraise for Support Act (an initiative organised by Ella), and featured in national and international news advocating for musicians through covid cancellations. In 2023, Ella also organised ‘Can’t Touch This’ festival at The Zoo BNE to fundraise for consent education in Australian schools and universities via charity Consent Labs, raising over 3K for the organisation. TYDE is making waves and summiting mountains, and they’re just getting started.
TYDE is is led by Cole Clark Guitars-endorsed percussive fingerstyle guitarist Ella Belfanti, who has toured Aus and Japan solo playing National Folk Festival, Byron Bay Guitar Festival, Melbourne Guitar Show, Bluesfest Byron Bay and many more.
