The Forgotten Pyramids | Weekend in Meroe, Sudan

Sudan was home to numerous ancient civilizations most of which flourished along the Nile. Meroe, the capitol of Kin‌gdom of Kush, is located about 200 km north-east of Khartoum, at the east bank of Nile. Due to its unique character, it is one of the most important ancient cities in our hemisphere.
The Kushites built the pyramids some 800 years after the pyramids of Ancient Egypt. While clearly Egyptian in inspiration, the pyramids are quite unlike those at Giza. The most notable difference is in size and pitch. The largest pyramid at Meroë is just under 30m high (or would have been were it still intact) with an angle approaching 70°. The smaller size allowed the pyramids to be constructed much faster and with less manpower, using simple cranes. Tomb chambers were dug directly into the rock below and the pyramid then erected above – a marked difference to Egypt, where the tomb is enclosed in the body of the pyramid. Approximately 255 pyramids were eventually constructed at three sites in the region over a period of a few hundred years to serve as tombs for the kings and queens of Napata.
Another unique site is the confluence of the Nile -the place where two Niles of distinct colors (or at least shades of muddy grey) flow next to each other before mixing to complete the longest river in the world.
Sudan has long been beset by conflict. Two rounds of north-south civil war cost the lives of 1.5 million people, and a continuing conflict in the western region of Darfur has driven two million people from their homes and killed more than 200,000. For several years now however, Northern Sudan is safe and quickly developing into emerging tiger. Khartoum has already its skyline with somehow chubby Burj Al Arab called here Burj Al Fateh and many new projects on the way. Within one weekend we will cover all of its highlights.
