The power of jazz is central to Baldwin’s novels, speeches, debates and spoken word, explored as a route via which African Americans have brought themselves out of bondage – an avenue of self-expression, salvation and catharsis – and as a vehicle for commentaries on race, sexuality, power, and trans-national identity. On Baldwin’s birthday, Friday 2 August, NYJO and special guest artists will take us on a musical journey through the composers referenced by Baldwin as he went about his life and work, and in celebration of his enduring legacy. For this special event NYJO will be led by Musical Director Peter Edwards.
**James Baldwin (1924–87)** was an acclaimed novelist, poet, essayist, playwright and activist. Spanning the disciplines of visual art, music and literature, Baldwin’s incendiary words and insights made him a leading voice at the height of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s; and continue to show readers and campaigners a way forward in hope to this day.
**NYJO (National Jazz Youth Orchestra)** bridges the gap between the established and the experimental. Dedicated to making jazz and creative music-making more accessible to all, the orchestra’s inclusive and community-responsive projects empower and centre the voices of the younger generation.
Pianist, musical director, and composer **Peter Edwards (b. 1983)** directs the Nu Civilisation ensemble alongside leading his own trio. He was selected for the 2023-24 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences inaugural Jonas Gwangwa Music Composition Initiative.
