The Filmmaker's (Director, Writer, Producer) Mastermind on Getting to the Next LevelSunday, September 28th, 2pm to 4pm — In-person discussion (Vancouver)
Being a director, writer, or producer in Vancouver is challenging. You often work in isolation while nurturing projects, with minimal development funding forcing you to bootstrap, and an overwhelming amount of work to manage!
Know what they do in New York and Los Angeles? They form small, position-oriented filmmaking groups to support each other (like Mastermind groups). Successful writers meet weekly, comedians collaborate, producers network, and even George Lucas and Steven Spielberg became longtime friends who started together. While every filmmaker is indeed an individual maverick, forming a tribe of like-minded people will help you succeed. Not only profesionally, but being a filmmaker takes a toll on your mental health and being with like-minded supporters really helps.
When people participate in Mastermind groups, something valuable happens: simply talking through your challenges helps you solve them, and others may offer perspectives you haven't considered.
Among West Coast filmmakers, I've noticed many directors, writers, and producers who either go in circles or—more frequently—fall behind on their work. I'm a case in point: despite having contacts with every broadcaster, distributor, and funder in Canada, my projects still need refining before submission. My process is detailed and time-intensive, causing me to consistently run out of time. I'm now shifting from a deadline-based strategy to a proactive create-and-shop approach. This insight took me ages to discover—I truly believe a Mastermind group of peers at similar or higher experience levels would have made this journey easier.
This session will be structured as a Mastermind, with each participant getting time to discuss themselves, their goals, and current challenges. It's an excellent opportunity for above-the-line filmmakers to connect and move closer to achieving your goals.
We have only one session planned for this Sunday in Vancouver. After this, a small ongoing group may form.
Note that these Masterminds focus on career navigation and project financing/production, rather than creative content development.
If interested, please feel free to RSVP and share with others.
