About this Event
Burkina Faso (West Africa) is one of the major cotton producing countries (1st African Producer, 9th worldwide for the period 2015/2016); which is likely to promote the country's textile production. However, the term "Faso dan fani" literally means in Dioula language "the woven loincloth of the fatherland" (fani: loincloth, dan: woven; faso: fatherland). Like many people in West Africa, the Burkinabé are well versed in the art of weaving.
"Let’s produce and consume Burkinabé" was President Thomas Sankara’s slogan when he brought faso dan fani to the forefront. “Wearing faso dan fani is an economic, cultural and political act of defying imperialism,” he used to say. Therefore, It was in 1970 that the textile factory was inaugurated under the name VOLTEX (Volta Textiles). At the time, the country was called Upper Volta. In 1983 following the "revolution" with Thomas Sankara, the factory was renamed Faso DanFani.
"The Faso DanFani on the Runway" is an event which aims to showcase Burkinabe textiles and the benefits of its pure cotton in the fashion industry. So, this event will bring together Burkinabe fashion designers from the Diaspora and the country. On the runway, they will showcase their art and the radiant colors of the main fabric of their country. A sales day will also be open before the fashion show, in order to allow our audience to learn about designers' collections but also the textiles that will be available. These textiles will be exhibited to support the weavers of Burkina Faso. Fashion for a cause.
