Communication is difficult. Communication between different cultures is very difficult. And communicating sensitive information across different cultures is even harder.As we live in a multicultural environment, this is an important issue to address. Most of us grew up in an environment that was different from the one we live in now. Eventually, we have all had to deal with culture shock and situations of miscommunication or frustrated expectations. Given that the rules of communication and social expectations are mostly unwritten, this can lead to situations where we find it difficult to know what is the right thing to do.
But communication is more than just the transmission of information. The way a culture communicates is also a reflection of the values and norms that govern that culture.
The film "The Farewell" does a good job exposing all these struggles in a way that challenges our notions of what is right and wrong, and the social rules that we tend to take for granted.
For the discussion, we will have a native Chinese guest who will share her experiences of similar situations that appear in the film, from both the Dutch and Chinese perspectives.
