About this Event

Toa Payoh is Singapore’s Housing Development Board’s (HDB) first residential project. To be fair, HDB already had the advantage of learning the ropes at Tiong Bahru and Queenstown, helmed by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT). Regardless, HDB was (and still is) able to speed all the way to current-day projects. All said, HDB has done well, with few hiccups – which were quickly resolved with minimal adjustments and changes.

Today, we’ll look at our flats island-wide and discuss how they have evolved over the decades. From simple quick fixes (especially those at Dawson Road and Buller Terrace, which don’t exist anymore) to the current day skyscrapers at Dawson Road and Margaret Drive. Back then, at Dawson Road, most were slab-sided and low-rise. Most were built with minimum luxuries with the focus on sanitation and ease of use. Health was a major consideration then.

Today, the designs of our flats are no longer the same. We have gone past the simple designs of yesteryears. We’ll discuss the state of our HDB building programs – complete with designs, both interior and exterior. Indeed, if we look closer, our town planners are even planning our homes delving into climate change, sun direction, wind direction and many other factors. It would be nice if they could really create a Forest out of Tengah!

Fun Fact: It is already rumoured the chickens at Cantonment Road have (finally) learnt how to cross the road!

Meet me at Toa Payoh MRT, 9am on the 29th September 2024. Upon alighting at Toa Payoh MRT, go in the direction of Exit A (left), and take the escalator up. I will meet you at Toastbox. You can recognize me with my Tourist Guide badge. We can end this tour at the dizzying height of 45th floor at Dawson Road, or come down to earth at Commonwealth Drive at Block 115 – Singapore’s very first flatted factory. Please remember to bring your MRT card as we’ll be taking the train from Toa Payoh to either Commonwealth or Queenstown MRT.

Note:

  • We do the worldwide practice of tipping at the end of the tour.
  • We also reserve the right to accept or reject habitual late cancellations and no-shows.
  • Call or message Uncle Chris at +65 91814298 for corporate, private, or student bookings.
