Gene Delcourt (Madison, Wisconsin) is a wood sculptor, who during his MFA studies at University of Wisconsin-Madison sought the guidance of Ho-Chunk artist Harry Whitehorse to further his education. During this time, Harry convinced Gene to attend wood carving symposiums abroad – leading Gene to participate in six European events. Honoring his mentor, Gene is a founder of the Harry Whitehorse International Wood Sculpture Festival.Gene is also the founder of "Humble Crossings" which helps people who wish for a more organic burial after death. His mission is to create eco-friendly caskets that focuses on sustainable practices. All of Gene's caskets are made using local lumber that is obtained from local tree services. He mills and planes the logs himself, and then cuts and joins the boards by hand using only pegs and glue. The results are beautiful and personalized caskets that are 100% biodegradable and green.
