Free art talk organised by Stockport Art Guild and hosted by Ed Glinert of New Manchester Walks.Francis Bacon (1909-92) is the most successful ever artist to come from the British Isles, whose paintings sell for barely believable prices.
Born in Ireland, he later moved to London where he initially worked as a painter-decorator. He adopted a sordid bohemian lifestyle and broke through to an astonished art world in the 1940's with paintings such as Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion (1944), infamous for their screaming mouths, distorted necks and Swastikas, capturing the horrors of the 20th century better than anyone. As Margaret Thatcher memorably described him. “That awful man who paints those horrible pictures”!
