About this Event

About this workshop:

Successful private practice requires the understanding of running a small business as well as proven clinical skills and has many ethical considerations. This workshop was developed to support counseling psychology students and licensed clinicians who are interested in learning about the essential steps of establishing a private counseling practice as well as to explore these important ethical considerations. This workshop offering is put together as a collaboration of the graduate counseling programs at the University of Southern Maine, the University at Farmington, Husson University, and Wisdom Journeys, LLC called the Intercollegiate Workshop Series. Participants will receive certificates with 4 contact hours in Ethics.

Objectives:

  • Participants will gain an understanding of what a private practice entails, how to establish a business team, setting fee for services, and basic bookkeeping issues
  • Participants will gain a basic understanding of the key elements in marketing a private practice
  • Participants will learn about the ethical considerations involved in running a private practice
  • Participants will learn about the potential issues involved in opening a practice, managing the necessary paperwork, and working with insurance companies

Facilitator Bio:

Dan Richards Phd, LCPC,NCC is in private practice in Cumberland Maine. He received his bachelors and masters degree at the University of Southern Maine and received his PhD in counseling from the state University of New York in Buffalo. He began seeing clients in 1975. In 1983 he became board certified with the National Board for Certified Counselors. While on the board of Directors for the American Personnel and Guidance Association (now known as the American Counseling Association), he formulated the idea of creating the Maine Clinical Council Association (Maine Mental Health Counselors Association) which he served as the founder and first president. In 1990, he wrote the first book on private practice, titled Building and Managing Your Private Practice. His commitment to the success of private practice led him to write over 50 articles and give over 75 workshops and trainings on various aspects of mental health and counseling issues throughout the United States and in Canada. He has served on many professional boards throughout the years.
