About this Event

The Ethical Frontiers of Neuroscience

Join us in person for a fascinating dive into the ethical challenges shaping the future of neuroscience! Explore how cutting-edge brain research is pushing boundaries and what that means for society. This event is perfect for anyone curious about the moral questions raised by new neural technologies.

You are invited to a special conversation with Dr. James Giordano, one of the most influential voices at the intersection of neuroscience, ethics, and global policy.

Dr. Giordano is Professor Emeritus of Neurology and Biochemistry and Chair Emeritus of the Neuroethics Program at Georgetown University Medical Center. His career spans the laboratory, the clinic, and the highest levels of international advisory work, including service as Chair Emeritus of the IEEE Brain Initiative, Senior Fellow of the European Union Human Brain Project, and Senior Neuroscience Advisor to the World Health Organization.

With more than 370 peer-reviewed publications, 10 books, and 50 government reports, Dr. Giordano has helped shape how the world thinks about the responsible development and application of neuroscience. His work addresses questions that are increasingly urgent for today’s scientists and scholars:

What are the ethical responsibilities of neuroscientists as brain science advances?
How should emerging neurotechnologies be governed?
What does it mean to apply neuroscience in medicine, national security, public health, and society at large?

Dr. Giordano is a Fellow of the Hastings Center for Ethics, the Royal Society of Medicine, and the Royal Society of Public Health; a former Fulbright Fellow; and an elected member of the European Academy of Science and Arts. He is widely known not only for his scholarship but also for his ability to challenge audiences to think deeply about the real-world consequences of scientific discovery.

This talk is an exceptional opportunity for GMU students to engage with a thinker who is actively shaping the global conversation on neuroscience and ethics.

Date: January 28
Time: 4 pm to 7 pm

Location: The HUB Rooms 2, 3, 4, 5
