Our Speakers

Tom Beech BVSc MRCVS

The Osteopathic Vet

Tom Beech is a Veterinary Surgeon, a qualified Equine Osteopath EDO and an Equine Dentist. Tom has a unique, whole-horse approach to the evalulation and treatment of all his equine cases.

Lecture 1: The body wide relationship to negative palmar/plantar angles.

Lecture 2: The dental relationship to hooves.

Mark Johnson Dip WCF

Mark began working on horses feet at the age of 14, starting a formal apprenticeship at 16 and qualifying as a farrier in the UK four years later. Too many questions and not enough answers drove Mark to continually challenge thinking and beliefs in the hoofcare industry. Frequently changing direction and trying different approaches, Mark has "settled" upon 3 key elements in his hoofcare business. First barefoot, second barefoot and boots and lastly composite shoes where necessary. Captivated by function of anatomy Mark is passionate about the whole horse, where everything has an effect on everything else and everything is connected. Mark is going to be looking at the impact of long toes on dorsopalmar balance incorporating the effect on the whole horse as seen from the hoofcare providers view and how he achieves optimum balance with the three key elements of his business. Mark will also be discussing the relationships between farriers and equine podiatrists and the similarities (and differences) he has found as barefoot has become more accepted in wider circles. These days the main and frequent reason his phone rings, is enquiries from horse owners and para professionals, seeking a different approach from the previous more conventional methods. Mark enjoys seeing and experiencing many of the new innovations in hoof protection entering the market, always seeking a better way.

Lecture: Long toes and dorsopalmar balance. Plus, the relationship between farriers and equine podiatrists.

Jane Cumberlidge

Jane Cumberlidge is a hoofcare provider, a bit and bridle fitter & saddle fitter. She is co-author of Barefoot Horse Keeping - The integrated Horse. Her main area of interest is biomechanics and how hoof balance and tack impact posture, movement, comfort and performance for both horse and rider. She is a director of The Association of Professional Bit and Bridle Fitters.

Lecture 1: The anatomy of bit and bridle fit. Jane will give an overview of cranial anatomy related to bit and bridle fit & the kinematic chains that bit and bridle fit affect. She will then discuss the impact of poor bit and bridle fit on posture & movement and how that impacts the arc of flight, hoof balance and limb loading.

Lecture 2: Bit and bridle fitting. Jane will discuss the different classification of bits and how they work. She will give an overview of the process she uses to evaluate the head for bit and bridle fitting. She will show what a good fit looks and feels like and how to check the fit on your own horses.

Theo Jones

Theo Jones is a final year student training to be an Equine Podiatrist. He has been working with free-living horses at the RSPB Insh Marshes reserve in the Cairngorm National Park for the last 4 years.

Lecture: Theo will be talking about working with free living horses and choosing to become an Equine Podiatrist.

Georgie Welge

Georgie Welge is a multi certified independant saddle fitter. She has completed education in bodywork, nutrition, behaviour, gait analysis, rider biomechanics and many more events, clinics, dissections etc. She is the Director of Master Saddle Fitters International, an organisation focused on the support of fitters and education on saddle fitting around the globe. As a part of here role, Georgie lectures internationally at Universties, Colleges and various clubs and events etc. She can often be seen aiding in scientific research. She is on a mission to ensure every horse and rider combination has the best saddle they can, and that riders understand what influences saddle fit. Saddle fitting has been dominated by marketing and sales for too long and she is on a mission to change that! Gerogie and MSFI are not connected to any one brand and MSFI is the only organisation out ther purely for saddle fitters and saddle research. She is on this mission because of the horse. There have been many times over Georgies career where she has questioned the hooves of the clients horses. After losing her own horse to a series of conditions that could have been avoided if she had ensured better hoof balance, she felt she needed to know more. Georgie is an Equine Podiatrist student and is reveling in all that she is learning and the relevance it has to the entire horses health and happiness.

Lecture: "Hoof to Saddle. What is the link?" Georgie will be covering the subject of how hoof balance affects saddle fit.

Christian Egeler

In a previous life I worked as a Consultant Anaesthetist and Chronic Pain Physician in Swansea, and spent 20 years developing the MDT pain clinic and providing the medical input and training of juniors for it. My training for the Equine Podiatry diploma, starting in 2018 out of keen interest in horses and horses feet, however this has changed my direction of travel and I am now more Equine Podiatrist than doctor. Chronic (persistent) pain is common everywhere in the world and affects up to 40% of people in the UK which, 20 years after it was recognised as a problem in its own right, appears to be more prevalent than ever. Different manifestations exist, and the role of the nervous system, its neuroplasticity, and influence of the psychology of pain has taken an increasing prominent role as we try to understand and treat people with pain. I want to explore those different kinds of pain, and how it may affect horses differently to humans. Neuropathic pain being pain related to abnormal function of the nervous system (locally or systemically) and nociceptive pain (of injury to bones, joints, muscles) are most commonly used to describe pain patterns, although terms like neuroplastic pain, central hypersensitivity, windup phenomenon and gate theory are also often used to describe the mechanisms of pain modulation. Time allowing I want to mention some specific pain diagnoses such as compartment syndrome pain which I believe is the equivalent of what a horse endures during acute laminitis.

Lecture: Different kinds of pain and how it may affect horses differently to humans.
