The Faiyum oasis is a basin 62 miles south of Cairo. It seems to have been particularly significant during the Middle Kingdom, when the new capital city, Ity-Tawy, was established nearby.Several Twelfth Dynasty kings built pyramids in the region, including Amenemhat III, who appears to have inspired the much later legend of a labyrinth.
Dr Naunton has made two television documentaries: The Man Who Discovered Egypt (BBC4) and Tutankhamun: The Mystery of the Burned Mummy (Channel 4).
