The Ecology of EcuadorMark your calendar for the exciting October Hendry Glades Audubon program “The Ecology of Ecuador” presented by Beth Richter on Thursday (new day) October 9th at 7:00 pm at the Dallas Townsend Agricultural Extension Building at 1085 Pratt Blvd. in LaBelle, Florida
Beth Richter is a landscape architect/horticulturist, conservationist, and a Florida Master Naturalist. She studied and worked in Wisconsin, California, the British Virgin Islands and since 2005, Florida. Her FL work was volunteering with Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center (CHEC), and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Her home garden has many native plants. She is a member of HG Audubon, PRAS Audubon, National Audubon, The Nature Conservancy and Arbor Day Foundation.
Mark and I went to Ecuador the end of June, and early July 2024 guided by Overseas Adventure Travel. The trip felt like it was designed for our interests in plants, animals, and conservation. We began the adventure in Quito, the capital, and enjoyed the cool nine thousand’ elevation valley surrounded by even higher mountains. One of the special places we visited was the Botanic Garden. We then flew in a small plane east, over the Andes to the headwaters of the Amazon River, traveling down the Napo River to our lodge. From there we hiked the jungle and took boat rides on the Napo and its smaller tributaries, seeing amazing jungle plants, birds, monkeys and learning about the Amazon headwaters ecosystem. Next, we flew west to the Galápagos Islands and boated around the archipelago. The wildlife there is not afraid of people, so the viewing was up close and personal. We visited a Giant Tortoise breading program, plus hiked on the islands, and stood in Darwin’s footsteps.
