About this Event

Bestselling author and Three Castles Burning creator Donal Fallon returns with The Dublin Pub: A Social and Cultural History. Join Donal at the vibrant Rascals Brewery in Inchicore, Donal will explore the hidden histories of iconic pubs like The Long Hall, Grogan’s, and The Palace, as well as Dublin’s early houses, gay bars and shebeens. From rebellion to modern social change, this is the untold story of the Dublin pub. Donal will be in conversation with New Island editorial director Aoife K. Walsh.

Donal Fallon is a historian and broadcaster with particular interest in the social history of the Irish capital. A founder of the popular Come Here To Me! blog in 2009, since 2019 he has presented the Three Castles Burning podcast, exploring the many histories of the Irish capital, which was adapted into the Eason Readers Favourite Book of 2022, Three Castles Burning: A History of Dublin in Twelve Streets. He is a social historian to the 14 Henrietta Street museum and his other publications include 14 Henrietta Street: From Tenement to Suburbia (2021) and The Lamplighters of the Phoenix Park (2023). He is formerly Historian-in-Residence to Dublin City Council.

Aoife K. Walsh is an award-winning editor. She has worked in and around the international publishing industry since 2005, joining New Island in late 2018 as commissioning editor and progressing into the new role of editorial director in early 2025. She has been an editor-in-residence at the West Cork Literary Festival and an SYP mentor and in 2023 was named a Bookseller Rising Star.

Aoife has a BA in English and Philosophy from University College Cork and a MPhil in Medieval Literature, Language and Culture from Trinity College Dublin, and she has completed courses at the Ryerson University Publishing Programme, Toronto, and the UCD Professional Academy. She has been a guest speaker on the MA in Creative Writing at University College Cork and the MA (Literature and Publishing) at University of Galway.

Aoife is particularly interested in unconventional stories and lesser-known histories, challenging, big-hearted and diverse characters, brazen and illuminating takes on life.
