This evening will be the second presentation of our winter play, "The Diary of Anne Frank". We are very proud to present this classic American play that dramatizes the world famous, and much beloved, story of the teenaged Anne Frank. Along with her family, as well as eight others, Anne lived, in hiding, in Amsterdam for 761 days during the Holocaust.
On August 4, 1944 the annex was raided and all eight residents, as well as a number of their helpers on the outside, were arrested. Most were sent Westerbork transit camp, and, ultimately to a number of concentration camps, including Auschwitz, Birkenau, and Bergen-Belsen.
The sole survivor among the group, Anne's father, Otto, edited, restructured, and eventually published his daughter's diary. This book has been translated into over 70 languages and sold over 30 million copies worldwide. It was turned into a film and a play in the 1950s.
Our production seeks to examine the ways in which memory can become a curated, public, act. Our Fall Play, "Here There Are Blueberries" dealt with the function of history as shared, or collective memory. This one seeks to understand more about how collective memory can be cultivated by an intentionally structured telling of a true story.
Please join us for a post show talk back with time for reflection on these important themes.
