This afternoon will be our final presentation of our winter play, "The Diary of Anne Frank". On the first day of the month in which Anne Frank is considered to have died, in Bergen-Belsen, in 1945, we will honor her spirit and memory. It is entirely conceivable that Anne would still be alive today, 81 years later, as a 96 year old woman.
To put this into perspective, Otto Frank, Anne's father, was the sole surviving member of the Frank family. After returning to Amsterdam following his liberation from Auschwitz, he published his daughter's diary. Otto eventually remarried, to a woman named Elfriede Geiringer. The Frank and Geiringer familes had been friendly before the war and Otto became stepfather to Eva Geiringer, a contemporary and friend of Anne's. Eva (married name "Schloss") grew up, was a published memoirist herself, and lived a life providing vital, first hand accounts of the atrocities of the Holocaust. Eva Schloss, one of Anne's friend, effectively her "step sister", passed away on January 3rd of THIS YEAR.
Our season is about "the making of memory" and it is all too easy to consider the Holocaust to be historical while, for some, it is still an active, lived experience. Please join us for our final presentation as we honor those lost, reflect on the lessons we can draw from this horrific period, and seek ways to prevent humanity from slipping into this kind of darkness again.
Please join us for a post show talk back with time for reflection on these important themes.
