About this Event

On the 18th of June the Department you know and love will be on the big screen showing brand new documentary Inside Bikelife and exclusive cuts of two old classics: The Last Hippie Commune and The City Run by Students.

SHOWING IN ORDER:

Inside Bikelife [Premiere]

Most people ride their bikes on dirt, not these kids. They’re terrorising local neighbourhoods in buzzing swarms, leaving skid marks and the smell of burnt tyres in their wake. This global trend attracting attention by social media and police alike has found its way into two of New Zealand’s notoriously shit towns - Huntly and Hamilton. In this premiere screening the Department investigates the lives of these riders who risk broken bones, shovel-wielding locals and J*il time for the thrill of popping a wheel-stand past the Golden Bakery.

The Last Hippie Commune [Exclusive Cut]

Founded in 1971 after six friends traveled to New Zealand's West Coast in search of cheap land, Katajuta is one of New Zealand’s last hippie communes. The remaining ten members have been left clinging to the mountains, battered by freezing westerly winds. The Department journeyed from their comfortable Auckland homes into the heart of Katajuta to capture the embers of a foregone revolution. This exclusive cut reveals the fading hopes of the hippie generation and a world that might die with them.

The City Run by Students [Exclusive Cut]

Castle Street is an area of New Zealand completely run by students. Notorious for street parties, riots, vandalism, and couch burning, it is the beating heart of New Zealand’s booze-and-gear fuelled student culture. In freezing winter temperatures, the Department investigated Dunedin’s filthiest student flats and the biggest street hiss of the calendar. This exclusive cut features never before seen footage, including interviews with the mayor, kebab-shop celebrities, and more.
