The Defining Ten is where an artist/creative is invited to take us on a musical dot-to-dot journey of the tracks that led them to who they are today. These could be the first song they have a memory of, first purchase, first song they learnt to play, the track that opened doors, the track that closed doors, a track that inspired and led to a new musical direction – so expect a variety of tracks from themselves and other artists. These tracks will be played in turn – either from vinyl, CD or streamed – and discussed with the artist.

On Thursday 27th February we welcome Max Decharne from The Flaming Stars and Gallon Drunk to Worthing to discuss his Defining Ten.
Writer and musician Max Décharné is the author of ten books – his most recent being Teddy Boys – Post-War Britain and the First Youth Revolution which was The Sunday Times Book of the Week. Max began his music career drumming with friend Nikki Sudden, formerly of cult post punk band Swell Maps, before joining as the drummer for the band Gallon Drunk. He would write and perform with them on their debut album You, The Night…And the Music and the Mercury prize nominated fol-low up From The Heart Of Town and would tour with many key indie acts from the time including Mor-rissey, PJ Harvey, Lush, Silverfish and Therapy.
He left Gallon Drunk in 1993, forming his own band The Flaming Stars who would go on to release 10 albums between 1996 and 2006 and perform 9 sessions for John Peel, who chose several of their tracks for his beloved Festive 50.
Max’s other critically acclaimed books include Vulgar Tongues: An Alternative History of English Slang, A Rocket in My Pocket, Hardboiled Hollywood and King’s Road: The Rise and Fall of the Hip-pest Street in the World and has also written for such publications as Mojo, The Guardian, The Ob-server, The Times, New Statesman, The Telegraph and The Spectator.
His debut solo LP, Night Darkens the Streets, was released on vinyl in November 2024 receiving strong reviews across the board – 9/10 in Uncut with Mojo and Record Collector giving it 4/5.
We are extremely excited to have Max discussing the 10 songs which have defined his musical career which will be followed by a reading from the new paperback edition of his fabulous Teddy Boys book.
