The Defining Ten is where an artist/creative is invited to take us on a musical dot-to-dot journey of the tracks that led them to who they are today. These could be the first song they have a memory of, first purchase, first song they learnt to play, the track that opened doors, the track that closed doors, a track that inspired and led to a new musical direction – so expect a variety of tracks from themselves and other artists. These tracks will be played in turn – either from vinyl, CD or streamed – and discussed with the artist. On Thursday 24th April we welcome Darran Hayman - most famously known for cult indie band Hefner - to Worthing to discuss his Defining Ten.
Darren Hayman is among Britain’s most prolific and idiosyncratic songwriters, and has been producing innovative and heartbreaking music for over 25 years.
He initially rose to prominence with the folk/indie group Hefner. They achieved cult fame in part due to the patronage of John Peel, for whom they recorded countless sessions. Hefner released four albums between 1998 to 2001.
Darren is now better known for an impressive and broad range of solo albums. He has made conceptual albums about William Morris; the English Civil War; the East Anglian witch trials; lidos, and British holiday resorts.
His three-album project Thankful Villages, about rural life, won an award from the Association of Independent Music, and a British Arts Council grant.
The main theme of his music remains the heart, however. His most recent album is with his new band New Starts and is a almost a full circle return to the style of his earliest recordings and is called More Break Up Songs (available on Fika Recordings.)
We are extremely excited to have Darren discussing the 10 songs which have defined his musical career which will be followed by a short stripped back acoustic solo performance.
