Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń
An international academic conference dedicated to research on media, popular culture, and spectacles. The event brings together scholars, artists, and practitioners interested in the history of attractions – from fairs and 19th-century amusement parks to digital culture and streaming platforms.
Keynote speakers:
– Prof. Nele Wynants – media scholar and performance researcher, leader of the B-magic project, one of the most significant initiatives for preserving the heritage of popular spectacles and early media.
– Cariad Astles – puppeteer and researcher, President of the UNIMA Research Commission, bridging theory and practice in multimedia performance.
Seminar with Special Guest:
– Prof. Erkki Huhtamo (UCLA) – pioneer of media archaeology, scholar of attraction culture, and author of Illusions in Motion: Media Archaeology of the Moving Panorama and Related Spectacles (2013, MIT Press).
The programme includes thematic sessions on the mobility of spectacles, intersections of technology and art, and a panel “Radio Histories” with Dr Joanna Walewska-Choptiany, promoting the themed issue of Kultura Współczesna.

Międzynarodowa konferencja naukowa poświęcona badaniom nad mediami, kulturą popularną i widowiskami. Wydarzenie gromadzi badaczy, artystów i praktyków zainteresowanych historią atrakcji – od jarmarków i XIX-wiecznych wesołych miasteczek po kulturę cyfrową i platformy streamingowe.
Potwierdzeni keynote speakers:
– Prof. Nele Wynants – medioznawczyni i badaczka performansu, liderka projektu B-magic, jednej z najważniejszych inicjatyw na rzecz zachowania dziedzictwa widowisk popularnych i wczesnych mediów.
– Cariad Astles – lalkarka i badaczka, prezydentka komisji badawczej UNIMA, łącząca teorię z praktyką multimediów na scenie.
Seminarium z udziałem gościa specjalnego:
