Our second visit to the spa town of Harrogate following from a previous visit at the old Odeon Cinema. When its first mineral springs were discovered in the 16th century, Harrogate became famous for its spas and tourists descended here, giving the small town a huge growth.
The Crown Hotel benefited from this massively. Originally starting out as a small inn on the same site, that was complete with its own farm, making it self sufficient.
The building we have today was completely rebuilt in 1870 as a grand Victorian hotel.
During WWII, the hotel was taken over by the RAF, who feared an attack on London, so moved its HQ elsewhere. The Crown hotel was used by signal staff from nearby RAF Leighton Buzzard.
The grand ballroom was used as a hospital for returning RAF pilots injured at war.
It wasn’t until the 1950s that the RAF handed it back over to the hotel again. Such was the building’s association with the RAF, it was nicknamed ‘RAF Harrogate’.
Staff working here have frightening stories, including a night porter who followed a man resembling a RAF pilot through a fire door, which didn’t alarm. Regular activity gets reported in the bedrooms too, most frequently furniture being dragged across the floor during the night.
Staff also have reported on many occasions a small boy in the same corridor on each occasion, only for him to vanish when approached.
We have the chance to investigate this old and historic building, and hopefully find out more secrets that this place has to offer. This is a huge building with a lot of history and stories, so let’s clear the diary and get ready for a fun investigation 👻
