Saturday Speaker Series: Dana B. ShoafIn 1855, Secretary of War Jefferson Davis sent Captain George McClellan, and Majors Alfred Mordecai, and Richard Delafield, the commission leader, to study the Crimean War between the Russian Empire and the ultimately victorious alliance of the Ottoman Empire, France, the United Kingdom, and Sardinia-Piedmont. Their published observations helped revolutionize American medical practices during the Civil War.
NMCWM Director of Interpretation Dana B. Shoaf will examine the Delafield Commission’s published report, “Report on the War in Europe in 1854, 1855, and 1856,” that opened American eyes to new military medical practices and had a profound impact on Civil War medicine.
The presentation is included with admission to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine.
