Directed by: Jayne Furlong
Tood, Weetsie, and Sybill are brides in rural Louisiana, each married to a Cliffert brother and living under their mother-in-law's roof. Their men are off to war and a local news article about these young wives attracts the attention of American magazine magnate Henry Luce. He decides they belong on the cover of Life Magazine and assigns Kate Miller, a war correspondent, to the story. Though she views doing a “women's piece” as a career setback, she accepts her first cover story and embarks on a greater journey than she anticipates. Kate's perspective shifts during her week with the Cliffert women, challenging her urban attitudes and confronting her own vulnerabilities in a male-dominated world. Filled with charm, heartache, and hope, The Cover of Life is a deeply affecting story about the struggle for self-worth.
The Cover of Life Audition Notice
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.
Kate Miller - A successful, middle-aged, female journalist succeeding in a man’s world.
A very modern woman used to living in a very modern world.
Tood - A smart young woman who has ambitions and a growing awareness of the limitations she faces. Married to the youngest Cliffert son, Tommy, and pregnant with their first child.
Sybil Harrist Cliffert - A flashy, “sophisticated” young woman who projects confidence and lashes out to cover up her own insecurities. Married to Johnny Cliffert.
Weetsie Gail Cliffert - A conventional young woman whose ambition to be the best wife and mother possible sometimes blinds her to the dreams and feelings of others. Married to Jerry Don Cliffert.
“Aunt Ola” Cliffert - The strong matriarch of the Cliffert family who has faithfully played the role of loyal wife, tolerant mother, and benevolent mother-in-law - possibly to a fault. Mid-forties but appears older than her age.
Addie Mae McGough Blackard - A small-town newspaper reporter with affected stylishness and extensive local knowledge. The events in this play are quite likely the highlight of her life.
Tommy Cliffert - Youngest brother of the Cliffert family. Eager, friendly, and insecure. A sailor serving in the South Pacific. Married to Tood.
*All characters require a Southern accent except Kate Miller*
