It never starts, it never stops
Since The Contest of Pleasures’ first concert in 1999, numerous writers and listeners have described how the group’s music reset their expectations on how acoustic wind instruments could sound and interact together. Over the intervening 25 years, aspects of the trio’s methods have entered the “lingua franca” of new and improvised musics - but, as the group discovered at this year’s HCMF (2023), it’s remarkable how the combination continues to find fresh sonic worlds and, perhaps more importantly, ways to form musical relationships.

GIRILAL BAARS
Girilal Baars is vocalist and composer based in Uppsala, Sweden.
He works in the fields of improvisation, electroacoustic music/sound art, and contemporary art music. Often with elements from vocal folk music, also a field he has specialised in for many years.
