About this Event
The Community Living Room is a gathering space for open and meaningful conversation. It is a place to engage with the past and present while imagining new possibilities for the future. This discussion will explore how youth, scholars, artists, and activists from the Hill District have shaped ideas about freedom.
Figures such as August Wilson and Dr. Barbara Sizemore have influenced the understanding of struggle and possibility. Their work and the movements they inspired continue to offer valuable lessons. The discussion will also examine the role of Black media, particularly in moments of political urgency. Robert Vann and the Pittsburgh Courier, which began publishing in 1910, became one of the most politically influential Black newspapers of the 20th century. Through carefully crafted campaigns, it helped reshape the political landscape in ways that aligned with reformists and radicals working toward Black liberation.
This is an opportunity to reflect on these histories and their relevance today. The Community Living Room offers a space for deeper dialogue, connection, and learning from the wisdom of those who came before us.
